In 2022, around 132 million people in the United States reported that they had used marijuana at least once in their lifetime. For the state of Virginia, in the year 2022, the total number of adults who stated they have used marijuana was 20.26%.
Cannabis, or marijuana, use directly affects brain function; specifically the parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning, attention, decision-making, coordination, emotions, and reaction time. Long-term marijuana use has been linked to mental illness in some people, such as: temporary hallucinations, temporary paranoia, and/or worsening symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.
